Patrick Kazonda is a Tanzanian ICT Specialist and Research Data Manager with over 18 years of experience in information and communication technologies, statistical analysis, data systems integration, and longitudinal research data management. His career spans critical roles in public health and social science research projects, where he has developed and supported complex data infrastructures. He has collaborated with institutions such as the University of Dar es Salaam, Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), and the School of Public Health and Social Sciences, contributing to impactful research efforts in both urban and rural contexts.
Technically proficient in tools such as C++, Visual Basic, Java, STATA, SPSS, R, EPI-Info, MySQL, Microsoft Access, Excel, and FoxPro, Patrick also specializes in REDCap and Open Data Kit (ODK) for electronic data capture, including offline and API-integrated platforms. His core strengths lie in designing secure, scalable, and efficient systems for managing complex datasets, especially for longitudinal and cohort studies.
Patrick has played key roles in several high-profile projects, including the Dar es Salaam Urban Cohort Study (DUCS), where he has managed and designed the integrated data structure since 2011; the PREHOPE Project, focusing on maternal and newborn health; the HADITHI ZETU Project, using storytelling to promote maternal health; and the DECIDE Study (2018–2020), which explored decision-making and mental health in households. In addition to his technical contributions, Patrick is a recognized researcher in public health and nutrition. His work addresses critical challenges such as HIV treatment resistance, socio-economic health determinants, and nutrition. He has co-authored publications in journals such as Scientific Reports, Current Developments in Nutrition, and Global Food Security, with studies focusing on viral suppression, dietary patterns, and food environments. His recent work highlights the emergence of resistance mutations among treatment-experienced HIV-1 patients in Dar es Salaam.
Patrick’s research has received support from major institutions including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the South African Medical Research Council. Fluent in Swahili and English, and with working knowledge of Chinese, Patrick combines his ICT, research, and communication skills to support data-driven health innovation. His continued leadership in ICT training, network design, data security, and system development makes him a valuable contributor to public health research and capacity-building efforts across Tanzania and the region.
