George Bwire holds a Master of Science in Microbiology and Immunology from the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) and a PhD in Clinical and Epidemiological Virology from KU Leuven in Belgium. He is a faculty member at MUHAS in Tanzania, where he is involved in teaching, research, and consultancy in global health, infectious diseases, and health systems. Since 2014, Dr. Bwire has led and contributed to a broad range of research projects on infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), malaria, and COVID-19. His work spans both clinical and laboratory domains, with a strong focus on translating scientific evidence into practice, informing policy, and advancing systems-level improvements.
Dr. Bwire is actively engaged in implementation research and evidence synthesis to support national, regional and global health policy development, contributing to systematic reviews and policy briefs that guide priority setting and resource allocation in low- and middle-income countries. His implementation research addresses key areas of health system strengthening, such as HIV treatment and prevention, improving access to diagnostics and essential medicines, service integration, and workforce capacity-building. Dr. Bwire has authored more than 60 articles in international peer-reviewed journals and serves as an ad-hoc reviewer for leading publishers, including BMC, Wiley, and Taylor & Francis.
